NM uses varying pseudonyms in his solo works and collaborations, mostly in connection with different instrumentation and methods, as well as for live or studio projects.

Solo

Ypsmael, 2010 - present

  • (also: Yps Mael, Norman Ypsmael, Norman Ipsmael, etc.) Live performance, hardware-based electroacoustic improvisation. 
  • Releases on LP, lathe cut single and cassette; several net releases and small editions for concert tours, e.g. US Northeast and Midwest (2012, 2013), US West Coast and Southwest (2018). 
  • Artistic works by and with Ypsmael have appeared worldwide since 2010 in radio broadcasts and on-air performances, as well as live on stage over 150 times in total, including shows in Los Angeles, New York City, London, Paris, Berlin, Istanbul, Bern, Budapest, Belgrade, Sofia, etc.


SmaelyP, 2017 - present

  • (also: Smaely P) Production, sound collage, radio play, live performance. 
  • The sound collage album (Are You Taken) Aback was released on the Chocolate Monk label (2023) to critical acclaim.
  •  "THE PERIS VARIATIONS" is a digital compilation album accompaying a book of 13 graphic scores by Oliver William Olivers released by Longs Arm  Artefacts. SmaelyP provided a 16-minute interpretation of the score alongside other contributions by Bohman Brothers, Agatha  Max, Colin Webster, Carnivorous Plants, Wojciech Rusin, Old Million Eye, and more.  
  • SmaelyP has appeared six times on European radio programmes and eight times live.


Ae Lypsm, 2019 - present

  • (also: AeLypsm) Physical computing, sound collage, live performance.
  • LP release planned for 2025.
  • First appeared with a solo work titled Electromechanic Gong Ensemble at HFU Tag der Medien, Global Forest Klangspiel#9 and ZKM Next Generation (all in 2019), as well as five live performances and a radio programme.
  • Collaborations with Bryan Day and Simon Whetham.


Psmaely, 2018 - present

  • Synthesis, live performance.
  • Musical first encounter on stage for collaboration with Mirian Kolev (alias E.U.E.R.P.I.) in Bulgaria.


MaeLyps, 2012 - 2019

  • Organisation of concerts, workshops and netlabel, currently on hiatus.
  • Parts of these activities will be continued under NM and Soundindex.


NM, 2017 - present

  • (also: Norman I. Mueller) Audio production, engineering, mastering, screenwriting, film direction and production, auditory scene design, dramaturgy, workshop instructor.

Duo

Dominik Irtenkauf & Smaely P, 2021 - present

  • Radio play / short radio play series; Dein und mein Wald (text, voice: Dominik Irtenkauf; concept, composition, sound design, realisation: SmaelyP) was awarded third place among the prizewinners for the best production of the year at Hörspielwiese Köln in Cologne, Germany (2022). 
  • The English-language version of Dein und mein Wald aired at Radiophrenia Festival (Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow, 2023), as well as sequel with the title Dein und mein Meer (2025). 


Ypsmael + Eloine, 2018 - present

  • (also: Eloine + Ypsmael or Bryan Day + AeLypsm) free electro-acoustic improvisation and live electronics with self-invented instruments. 
  • So far 10 live performances in Germany and Great Britain, 4 releases on LP, CDr, cassette and digital. 


Krausen Ypsmael, 2013 - present

  • (also: Krausen-Ypsmael Duo, KYD, KrauSmaelyP) Drums, percussion, objects and free electro-acoustic improvisation, live electronics. 
  • So far 10 live performances in Germany, Austria and Great Britain.
  • One interdisciplinary release (S. Krausen, painting; Ypsmael, music) on cassette and digital, as well as 4 digital releases. LP in production. 


Simon Whetham & Ypsmael, 2014 - present

  • Live electronics with kinetic objects and free electro-acoustic improvisation. 
  • Two live performances in Germany so far.
  • A release on USB (edition of one) available via Global Forest; book release with sound carrier planned for 2025/26.


Hans-Joachim Irmler & Ypsmael, 2024 - present

  • Organ, synthesiser, free electro-acoustic improvisation and live electronics.
  • Release planned for 2025/26.


Ypsmael and Diurnal Burdens, 2024 - present

  • (also: Diurnal Burdens and Ypsmael) Free electroacoustic improvisation and sound collage with live electronics, tape, synthesisers, samplers, field recordings.

  • A radio play in several parts, which is created from many individual sound collages, which, when put together, appear as individual short radio plays. Part 1: Dein und mein Wald (first broadcast as award winner [3] at Hörspielwiese Cologne); Part 1: "Your and my forest" (English version, first broadcast: Radiophrenia, 2022); Part 2: Dein und mein Meer (current production).


Krausen Ypsmael, 2022 - present

  • Stefan Krausen (live painting based on music), Ypsmael (free electroacoustic improvisation with live electronics based on painting and visual impressions).
  • In addition to the live improvisation duo with a focus on music (see above), this new variant was created in 2022, in which real-time experiments are carried out with associative-emotional inputs from two disciplines. Released on cassette and digitally on the Steep Gloss label.
